The Door of Easter: What Jesus Opened on the Cross. Part 5: Thirst (Small Group Curriculum)

Worship

Listen to a Worship song (If you need suggestions you can use one from the YouTube Playlist for this week) or express something that you are thankful to God for.

Welcome

  1. Check In – How is everyone doing (good things, lessons learned, prayers answered)?

Word

  • Have you had a time when you were extremely thirsty, what were the circumstances?
  • Read John 19:28-29
  • Jesus could have played his “God Card” and not suffered through the cross. What does it teach us about Jesus?
  • Jesus has been on the cross for six hours at this point and this is the first time Jesus has shown any concern about his own needs. D.L. Moody says “I know of nothing that speaks louder for Christ and Christianity than to see a man or woman giving up what they call their rights for others, and ‘in honor preferring one another.’”  How did Christ display this on the cross and how can we model it?
  • Read Philippians 2: 1-11
  • What does this passage teach us about Jesus’ example?
  • Jesus expressed in John 4: 13-14 and John 7:37-38 that he was going to fill the thirst of people.  How does the world try to fill their thirst?  How does Jesus ultimately fill people’s thirst?
  • Jesus encouraged his disciples, in Matthew 10:42 to “give a cup of cold water”?  How can we do the same for people?

Witness

What are ways that we can give a “cup of cold water”?

Prayer

Pray for any other concerns that your group has.
